Etymology 1.1

[edit]

Borrowed from Aramaic עַרְסָא / ܥܲܪܣܵܐ (ʕarsā, bed, litter, luxurious couch etc.),[1] originally referring to the ceremonial presentation of a bride to her husband for marriage to be consumed.[2] Doublet of عَرْش (ʕarš, throne), regular cognate to the Aramaic since Proto-Semitic s₂ gives Arabic š and Aramaic s. The vocalism of the present word, if not merely being owed to the reduced ă of the ḥaṭaf pataḥ in the absolute state, needs to represent an unattested dialectal Aramaic form, like Old Armenian կուղբ (kułb, beaver) is from ܟܲܠܒܵܐ (kalbā, dog)
