Inherited from Proto-Turkic *köyŋelek; cognate with Azerbaijani köynək, Karakhanid کُنکْلَکْ (köŋlek), Crimean Tatar kölmek, Turkmen köýnek, Khakas кӧгенек, Kyrgyz көйнөк (köynök), Southern Altai кӱнек (künek), Kazakh көйлек (köilek), Uzbek ko'ylak, Bashkir күлдәк (küldək), Tatar күлмәк (külmäk).
