Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian ANŠWTA, mltwm’ (mardōm, mankind, people). Related to مرد(mard, man), مردن(mordan, to die). Cognate to Sogdian [script needed] (mrtxm’y /martoxmē, martəxmē/, people, man). Analyzable in Persian as مرد(mard, man) +‎ تخم(toxm, descent, seed) (lit. "descent of man")[1].
