Etymology[edit]

An Iranian borrowing. Compare Middle Persian mdyʾn' ‎(*mayān, middle; among, between) (whence Persian میان ‎(miyân)), Manichaean Parthian mdyʾn ‎(*maẟyān, among, amid, between), Manichaean Sogdian myẟʾn ‎(*mēẟan, middle), Avestan [script needed] ‎(maiẟyāna-, middle). Their first part is ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *médʰyos.
