Persian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle Persian [script needed] (nmwtn' /nimūdan/, to show, guide). Said to be derived from Proto-Indo-European *h₁én (in, down) + *meh₁- (to measure). Compare Avestan 𐬥𐬌𐬨𐬀(nima, measure down, show). Also related to آزمودن(âzmudan, to test, experience), and پیمودن(paymudan, to measure, to walk).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (Kabuli): IPA(key): /namuːdan/

Verb[edit]

نمودن (namudan) (present stem نما(namâ))

Dari Persian نمودن
Iranian Persian
Tajik намудан (namudan)
  1. to show, to cause to appear, to exhibit
  2. to appear, to seem
  3. (in compounds) to do, make

Usage notes[edit]

In formal speech, any compound verb that is formed with کردن(kardan) can also be formed with نمودن(nemudan). This is used to avoid the repetition and overuse of کردن(kardan) in sentences. For example, the compound verb میانجیگری کردن(miyâjigari kardan, to mediate) can also be seen as میانجیگری نمودن(miyânjigari nemudan).
