From Akkadian 𒌚𒁈 (nisannum) through Classical Syriac ܢܝܣܢ (nīsan), but ultimately from Sumerian 𒉠 (nisag̃). Cognate with Hebrew נִיסָן (nisan, Nisan, the first month of the Hebrew lunisolar calendar).
