From Classical Syriac ܬܡܘܙ (tāmūz), ultimately from Akkadian 𒌚𒋗 (dumuzu). Cognate with Hebrew תַּמּוּז (tammuz, Tammuz, the fourth month of the Hebrew lunisolar calendar).
