From Aramaic ܝܶܫܽܘܥ (yešūʿ), from Biblical Hebrew יֵשׁוּעַ (yešū́aʿ, “Jesus”), a syncopated form of יְהוֹשֻׁעַ (yəhōšúaʿ, “Joshua”). Doublet of يَشُوع (yašūʕ, “Joshua”) and possibly عِيسَى (ʕīsā, “Jesus”).
