Inherited from Proto-Turkic *kölige, from the root *köl (shade, shadow); cognate with Azerbaijani kölgə, Bashkir күләгә (küləgə), Crimean Tatar kölge, Kazakh көлеңке (köleñke), Kyrgyz көлөкө (kölökö), Tuvan хөлеге (xölege), Turkmen kölege and Yakut күлүк (külük).
