From Proto-Semitic *ṣ́yḳ- (“to be narrow”); cognate with Arabic ضاق (ḍāq), Biblical Hebrew צוּק (ṣûq, “to constrain, bring into straits, press upon”), and Akkadian 𒊓𒀀𒄣 (sâqu). Doublet of ܫܘܼܩܵܐ (šūqā).
