From the root ܥ-ܠ-ܩ (ʿ-l-q) related to sticking or adhering. Compare Arabic عَلَقَة (ʕalaqa), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic עַלְקָא (ʿālləqā), Hebrew עֲלוּקָה (ʿălūqā́), Ge'ez ዐለቅት (ʿäläḳt), Tigrinya ዓለቅቲ (ʿaläḳti), Tigre ዓለቅ (ʿaläḳ), Amharic ዓለቅት (ʿaläḳt), Argobba ሃልቂት (haləqit), Sebat Bet Gurage ዓለቅት (ʿaläḳət).
