From Proto-Semitic *ʿrp ‎(cloud) + a suffixed -l. Compare Hebrew עֲרָפֶל ‎(ʿărāᵽel) and Ugaritic 𐎓𐎗𐎔𐎚 ‎(ʿrpt).
