Probably from the older form *ܩܵܢܸܨ (*qāniṣ), Borrowed from Akkadian kalāṣu (to contract oneself up, roll up, shrivel, wrinkle), possibly related to Akkadian ganāṣu (to wrinkle the nose, sneer) (and if so, a doublet of ܓܵܢܸܨ (gāniṣ, to smile)). Compare Arabic قلص.
