From Proto-Indo-Aryan *ā́śā, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ā́ćā ~ *aćas (region, area), perhaps from the BMAC substrate . Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬯𐬀𐬵(asah).[1]
