Etymology[edit]

From Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀔𑀻𑀭 (khīra), from Sanskrit क्षीर (kṣīra), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *kṣiHrám, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kšiHrám, possibly from the BMAC substrate.[1]. Compare Pali khīra, Assamese গাখীৰ (gakhir, milk). Doublet of शीर (śīr), a borrowing from Persian.
