Etymology[edit]

Likely from Proto-Indo-Iranian *chōṭṭa. Compare Nepali छोटो (choṭo, small), Gujarati છોટું (choṭũ), Punjabi ਛੋੱਟਾ (choṭṭā, small), Oriya ଛୋଟ (choṭô, small, lesser), Assamese [script needed] (soṭ, low grade).

Earlier lexicographers suggest Sanskrit क्षुद्रक (kṣudraka, small, insignificant).
