[edit]Etymology
[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian زر (zar), from Middle Persian *zarr (“gold”), from Parthian *zarn (“gold”) (the inherited form would have started with a d, as is seen in Old Persian 𐎭𐎼𐎴𐎡𐎹 (d-r-n-i-y)), from Proto-Iranian *jr̥Hanyam, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰr̥Hanyam, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰl̥h₃enyom; ultimately derived from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰelh₃- (“green, yellow”). Doublet of हिरण्य (hiraṇya). Compare Punjabi ਜ਼ਰ (zar) / زَر (zar), Gujarati જર (jar), Marathi जर (j̈ar), Northern Kurdish zêrr, Sanskrit हिरण्य (hiraṇya), Old Persian 𐎭𐎼𐎴𐎡𐎹 (d-r-n-i-y), Old Church Slavonic злато (zlato), Latvian zelts, and English gold and yellow.
