Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit [Term?], from Sanskrit सौवर्ण (saúvarṇa), from सुवर्ण (suvárṇa), from सु- (su-, good, pleasing) +‎ वर्ण (varṇa, hue, color). Cognate with Marathi सोने (sone), Punjabi ਸੋਹਣਾ (sohṇā), ਸੋਨਾ (sonā), Nepali सुन (sun), Gujarati સોનું (sonũ), Oriya ସୁନା (suna), Bengali সোনা (śona), Assamese সোণ (xün).
