Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *dwáyšas (“fear, hatred”), from Proto-Indo-European *dwóy-sos, from *dwey- (“to fear”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬛𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬉𐬱𐬀𐬵 n (duuaēšah, “hostility”), Ancient Greek δεινός (deinós), Middle Persian byš (bēš, “pain”), Latin dīrus.[1]
