Sanskrit[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Sometimes explained as an artificial Sanskritization of Prakrit 𑀡𑁂𑀯𑀸𑀮 (ṇevāla), compare Newar नेवाः (nevāḥ, Newar). Others regard the Sanskrit form as older. Perhaps ultimately of Sino-Tibetan origin.

Popular etymologies derive it from compounds like ने (ne, a chief) +‎ पाल (pāla, cherishing).
