From Maharastri Prakrit 𑀨𑁄𑀟 (phoḍa), from Sanskrit स्फोट (sphoṭa, “boil, abscess; explosion”). Cognate with Marathi फोड (phoḍ), Hindi फोड़ा (phoṛā).
