From the root स्फुट् (sphuṭ), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)bʰel- or *(s)pel- (to split) with a *-t- extension. Cognate with Old Church Slavonic рас-плитати (ras-plitati, to cleave, split), Old English speld (splinter), English split.
