Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (to twist, weave, wrap) and thus related to Latin vieō (to bend, twist, weave), Lithuanian výti (to turn, wind), and Russian вить (vitʹ, to wind, twist, weave). See also वयति (vayati, to spin, weave), from the Sanskrit root वे (ve, to weave).
