From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śánsati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćánsati, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱéns-e-ti, from *ḱens- (to announce, proclaim). Cognate with Latin cēnseō, Ancient Greek κόσμος (kósmos), Avestan 𐬯𐬀𐬢𐬵 (saŋh, to declare), Polish sądzić.
