Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćráwas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱléwos (fame, glory). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬭𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬢𐬵(srauuaŋh, word), Ancient Greek κλέος (kléos, fame), Russian сло́во (slóvo). Synchronically analysable as श्रु (śru, root) +‎ -अस् (-as).
