Etymology

From Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćráwas, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱléwos (fame, glory). Cognate with Avestan 𐬯𐬭𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬢𐬵 (srauuaŋh, word), Ancient Greek κλέος (kléos, fame), Russian сла́ва (sláva).

      स॒प्तेदिन्द्रं॒ न स्र॒वतो॑ गृणन्ति॒ नि यु॑ध्याम॒धिम॑शिशाद॒भीके॑॥
      yásya śrávo ródasī antárurvī́ śīrṣṇéśīrṣṇe vibabhā́jā vibhaktā́.
      saptédíndraṃ ná sraváto gṛṇanti ní yudhyāmadhímaśiśādabhī́ke.
      Him (Indra) whose fame is spread across the wide earth and heavens, who, as dispenser, gives each chief his portion, seven following rivers glorify like Indra.
      He slew Yudhyamadhi in close encounter.
