Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *sth₂tós (“placed”), from *steh₂- (“to stand”).[1] Cognate with Ancient Greek στᾰτός (stătós), Latin status (“fixed, set”). By surface analysis, स्था (sthā) + -त (-tá).
