Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Sanskrit স্থিত (sthita).

Doublet of ঠিক (ṭhik, right, correct) and ঠিকানা (ṭhikana, address). Also related to থাকা (thaka, to live, stay), থানা (thana, police station), ঠাঁই (ṭhãi, place), থালা (thala, plate), স্থল (sthol, ground, land), স্থাপন (sthapon, placing), স্থাপত্য (sthapotto, architecture), স্থান (sthan, place), and -স্তান (-stan).

Cognate with Assamese স্থিত (sthit) and থিয় (thio), Odia ସ୍ଥିତ (sthitô), as well as Hindustani ستهت / स्थित (sthit), Gujarati સ્થિત (sthit), Marathi स्थित (sthit), Kannada ಸ್ಥಿತ (sthita), Khmer ស្ថិត (sthət).
