Etymology

Derived from থান (than, place) which is from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀣𑀸𑀦 (thāna), from Sanskrit स्थान (sthāna), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stáHnam, from Proto-Indo-European *stéh₂-no-m, from *steh₂- (to stand). Compare Hindi थाना (thānā) and Urdu تھانہ. Doublet of ঠাঁই (ṭhãi).
