Inherited from Prakrit 𑀅𑀮𑀕𑁆𑀕 (alagga​), from Sanskrit अलग्न (alagna, disconnected, detached), from अ- (a-, not) +‎ लग्न (lagna, connected, attached). Cognate with Assamese আলগ (alog), Odia ଅଲଗ (ôlôgô), ଅଲଗା (ôlôga), Magahi 𑂃𑂪𑂏 (alag), Bhojpuri अलग (alag), Gujarati અળ્ગું (aḷgũ), Punjabi ਅਲਗ੍ਗ (alagg), Hindi अलग (alag), अल्गा (algā), Marathi अलग (alag), अळग (aḷag​).
