Inherited from Magadhi Prakrit 𑀕𑀟𑁆𑀟 (gaḍḍa), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀕𑀭𑁆𑀤 (*garda), from Sanskrit गर्त (garta). Cognate with Hindi गड्ढा (gaḍḍhā). Doublet of গাঁড় (gãṛ) and গর্ত (gorto).
