Corruption of the name of the local ruler, মোমেন সিং (mōmen śiṅ), whose name was a compound of bilingual origin, from Arabic مُؤْمِن (muʔmin, believer) and Sanskrit सिंह (siṃha, lion); equivalent to Bengali মোমেন (mōmen) and সিংহ (śiṅho).
