[edit]Borrowed from Portuguese padre (/padri/, “priest, father (term of address for a priest)”), from Old Galician-Portuguese padre (“father”), from Latin pater, patrem (“father”), from Proto-Italic *patēr, from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr (“father”). Doublet of ફાધર (phādhar), પિતા (pitā), પિતૃ (pitŕ), and પિદર (pidar).
Compare Bengali পাদ্রি (padri), Hindustani پادری / पादरी (pādrī), Marathi पाद्री (pādrī), Konkani पाद्रि (pādri), Malayalam പാതിരി (pātiri) and Sinhalese පාදිලියා (pādiliyā).
