Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑁂𑀟𑁆𑀠 (*peḍḍha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀓𑀸- (-ikā-), likely from a substrate. Cognate with Hindustani پیڑھی / पीढ़ी (pīṛhī), Marathi पेढी (peḍhī), Punjabi پیڑھی / ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀ (pīṛhī), and Sindhi پيڍِي / पेढी (peḍhī).
