From Old Tamil 𑀧𑁳𑀶𑀼 (peṟu). Cognate with Old Kannada ಪೆಱು (peṟu) (Kannada ಹೆರು (heru)), Malayalam പെറുക (peṟuka).

1. (transitive) to receive, get, gain, obtain, secure

   Synonyms: அடை (aṭai), வாங்கு (vāṅku)

   • c. 2nd Century BCE - 4th Century CE, Tirumular, Tirumantiram:

     யான் பெற்ற இன்பம் பெறுக இவ்வையகம்.

     yāṉ peṟṟa iṉpam peṟuka ivvaiyakam.

     May the world receive all the pleasure I have obtained.

2. (transitive) to give birth to, beget, bear (a child)
3. (intransitive) to be worth; be worthy of; fetch a price

   Synonym: தேறு (tēṟu)

4. (auxiliary, after an infinitive) a passivizer.

   Synonyms: (archaic) உண் (uṇ), (more common) படு (paṭu)

5. (auxiliary, after infinitive) indicates 'in the possession of' or 'in receipt of' when added to those verbs in the sphere of 'get' or 'get formed'.

Usage notes

Except the sense "to give birth to", all the others are only used in Formal Tamil.
