  1. (transitive) to put, place, lay, set
    Synonyms: போடு (pōṭu), இடு (iṭu)
    பணத்தைப் பெட்டியில் வைத்தேன்.
    paṇattaip peṭṭiyil vaittēṉ.
    I put the money in the box.
    தலையில் பூ வைத்துக்கொண்டாள்.
    talaiyil pū vaittukkoṇṭāḷ.
    She placed a flower on her head.
  2. to have, own, possess
    உன்னிடம் நம்பிக்கை வைத்திருக்கிறேன்.
    uṉṉiṭam nampikkai vaittirukkiṟēṉ.
    I have trust in you.
  3. (auxiliary) used with the infinitive of a verb to express a causative
    அவன் என்னைச் சிரிக்க வைத்தான்.
    avaṉ eṉṉaic cirikka vaittāṉ.
    He made me laugh.
  4. (auxiliary) used with a transitive verb to express an action with some future purpose
    கதவைத் திறந்து வை.
    katavait tiṟantu vai.
    Keep the door open (in case someone comes).
    குப்பை ஓலை பெட்டியில் போட்டு வைத்தார்கள்.
    kuppai ōlai peṭṭiyil pōṭṭu vaittārkaḷ.
    They put the trash into a leaf basket (for later disposal).
Usage notes

Both வை (vai) and போடு (pōṭu) can be translated as "put", but the former refers to careful, deliberate placing while the latter is somewhat reckless.
