From Pali kālakaṇṇī (dawdler; idler; loafer); probably via Khmer កាឡកិណី (kaalkenəy, evil person; mean person; witch). Compare कालकर्णि (kālakarṇi), from which the alternative form กาลกรรณี is derived.
