From Proto-Tai *q.pɯlᴬ (body hair; feather). Cognate with Lao ຂົນ (khon), ᦃᦳᧃ (ẋun), Tai Dam ꪶꪄꪙ, Tai Nüa ᥑᥨᥢᥴ (xón), Shan ၶူၼ် (khǔun), Aiton ၵ︀ုꩫ︀် (khun), Ahom 𑜁𑜤𑜃𑜫 (khun), Bouyei benl, Zhuang bwn, Nong Zhuang koan, Saek ปุ๋น.
