From Proto-Tai *ɡuːᴮ (pair). Cognate with Lao ຄູ່ (khū), ᦅᦴᧈ (kuu¹), Shan ၵူႈ (kūu). Compare Old Chinese (OC *ŋoːʔ, *ŋoːs, “pair”), Middle Chinese (MC nguwX|nguwH, “pair”).
