From Proto-Southwestern Tai *taːmᴬ¹ (“to follow; to continue”). Cognate with Lao ຕາມ (tām), Lü ᦎᦱᧄ (ṫaam), Shan တၢမ်း (táam), Tai Nüa ᥖᥣᥛᥰ (täam).
