Etymology[edit]
From Old Khmer °daṃnāya, °daṃnāyya (“forecast; prediction; prophecy”), extended forms of Old Khmer dāya (“to interpret; to portend; to presage"”), from which Thai ทาย (taai) was derived. Cognate with Modern Khmer ទំនាយ (tumniəy).
