Etymology

From มหา (má-hǎa, “great”) +‎ สาร (sǎa-rá, “essence; feature; element; etc”) +‎ คาม (kaam, “abode”), literally "abode of great essences"; believed to be a corruption of an old spelling, มหาสาลคาม (má-hǎa-sǎa-lá-kaam), from มหา (má-hǎa, “great”) +‎ สาล (sǎa-lá, “sal tree”) +‎ คาม (kaam, “abode”), literally "abode of great sal tree(s)", a calque of the old name of the city, ยางใหญ่ (yaang-yài, literally “great sal tree”); coined and given to the city by Rama IV on 22 August 2408 BE (1865 CE).
