Etymology[edit]
From Middle Chinese 命 (MC mjaengH, “life, fate, destiny”). Cognate with Lao ມິ່ງ (ming, “fate, destiny, auspicious thing”), Shan မိင်ႈ (mīng, “fate, destiny”), Ahom 𑜉𑜢𑜂𑜫 (miṅ, “fate, destiny”), Sui mingh (“fate”).
Attested since 1400–1419 in Wat Hin Tang inscription.[1] Sathiankoset surmised that this word used to mean "life" but was displaced by ชีวิต (chii-wít) and then by สิริ (sì-rì).[2]
