From Middle Chinese (MC daw, “pottery, mould; to mould”). Cognate with Lao ເຕົາ (tao), Northern Thai ᨲᩮᩢᩣ, Khün ᨲᩮᩢᩣ, ᦎᧁ (ṫaw), Shan တဝ် (tǎo).
