Etymology 1[edit]
From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰɯəkᴰ¹ᴸ (“taro”), from Proto-Tai *prɯəkᴰ (“taro”). Cognate with Lao ເຜືອກ (phư̄ak), Shan ၽိူၵ်ႇ (phòek), Tai Nüa ᥚᥫᥐᥱ (phǒek), Ahom 𑜇𑜢𑜤𑜀𑜫 (phük), Zhuang biek. Compare Sui qxgaags (“taro”), Proto-Hlai *hraːk (“taro”) and Proto-Austronesian *biʀaq (whence Paiwan viaq, Malay birah).
