From Middle Chinese (MC syeng, “sound”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈ᩠ᨿᨦ, Lao ສຽງ (sīang), ᦵᦉᧂ (ṡeng), Tai Dam ꪎꪸꪉ, Shan သဵင် (sǎeng), Tai Nüa ᥔᥥᥒᥴ (séng), Ahom 𑜏𑜢𑜂𑜫 (siṅ). Related to สำเนียง (sǎm-niiang).
