From Proto-Tai *selᶜ (classifier for long, thin objects). Cognate with Lao ເສັ້ນ (sen), Shan သဵၼ်ႈ (sāen), Saek แซ̂น. Compare Middle Chinese (MC sjenH, “thread”)
