From Middle Chinese 客 (MC khaek, “guest”). Cognate with Lao ແຂກ (khǣk), Lü ᦶᦃᧅᧈ (ẋaek¹), Shan ၶႅၵ်ႇ (khèk), Ahom 𑜁𑜢𑜀𑜫 (khik), Zhuang hek.
