Burmese

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Old Burmese ချန် (khyan), from Proto-Lolo-Burmese *kyin¹ ~ *ʔgyin¹ (sour); compare Akha [script needed] (tjhɛ́, sour) (STEDT). The Lolo-Burmese is traditionally connected to Proto-Sino-Tibetan *suːr ~ *swaːr (sour; be acid) (whence Mizo thûr (acid; sour), Old Chinese (OC *sloːn, “sour”)), despite the Lolo-Burmese forms not matching.
