Etymology 1[edit]

From Proto-Yoruboid *ɛ̀-ta or Proto-Yoruboid *à-ta. Cognate with Igala ẹ̀ta, Itsekiri ẹ̀ta, Ayere ita. The -ta root is widespread in many branches of Atlantic-Congo, see Ukaan táárh, Gade ɪ̀tá, Proto-Plateau *tat, Tee taa (see Proto-Lower Cross River *ìtá. Possibly related to Fon atɔ̀n, Edo eha, Baatonum ita.
