Etymology

From Proto-Vietic *ʔɛh (to defecate; faeces). Cognate with Muong Bi é. Compare Pacoh éh.

The Northern Middle Vietnamese yả is attested in the Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum et Latinum (1651).
